Three Idaho State Park Stops Worth Putting on the Calendar This Week
If you want an easy reason to get outside this week, Idaho State Parks has three scheduled outings in southern Idaho between Thursday and Saturday.

October can be one of the better times to explore southern Idaho: cooler evenings, earlier sunsets and fewer reasons to wait for summer before making a day trip.
The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation calendar currently lists one event at Castle Rocks State Park and two observatory programs at Bruneau Dunes for Oct. 8–10. Here is the quick planning version.
Thursday, Oct. 8: Ranch Fest at Castle Rocks
Castle Rocks State Park is scheduled to host Ranch Fest from 4 to 8 p.m. MDT on Thursday, Oct. 8. The state parks calendar lists admission at $7.
The park sits near Almo in south-central Idaho, next to the City of Rocks landscape. Its day-use areas are open seven days a week, and the visitor center remains on summer hours through the end of October.
If you are making the drive, the event is a good excuse to arrive before 4 p.m. and give yourself time to see the rock formations and surrounding country before the evening program begins.
Friday, Oct. 9: Observatory night at Bruneau Dunes
Bruneau Dunes is scheduled to hold an observatory program Friday from 6 to 11 p.m. MDT. Idaho State Parks lists admission at $5 per person or $20 per family, plus the park’s motor-vehicle entrance fee unless you have a valid Idaho State Parks Passport.
The program includes a planetarium show, presentation and telescope viewing. Because the program extends well after sunset, bring a layer for the temperature drop and check the park calendar before leaving home in case weather affects viewing.
Saturday, Oct. 10: A second Bruneau Dunes night
If Friday does not work, the observatory program is also scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, again from 6 to 11 p.m. MDT.
That makes Bruneau an easy weekend option rather than a one-night-only event. Arriving before dark also gives you time to see the dunes themselves before the focus shifts upward.
A quick planning note
These are scheduled events, not guarantees that every activity will proceed unchanged. Outdoor programs can be affected by weather and park conditions, so verify the Idaho State Parks event listing before making a long drive.
For Castle Rocks, the park lists its visitor center at 3035 S. Elba-Almo Road near Almo. Bruneau Dunes is southeast of Mountain Home. Both are the kind of Idaho trips where the drive is part of the outing, so give yourself more daylight than the event start time alone suggests.
