BEHIND IDAHOLENS

From Boise to the Entire State: Expanding IdahoLens Radio

One of the things I enjoy most about building IdahoLens is watching a feature that started with a simple idea become something much bigger. Radio is a perfect example.

Hand adjusting a broadcasting mixer in a studio

When we first added radio stations to IdahoLens, the focus was primarily on Boise and the Treasure Valley. It was a great starting point, but IdahoLens is meant to serve all of Idaho. Someone visiting from Twin Falls, Idaho Falls, Lewiston or Coeur d’Alene should have access to stations relevant to their part of the state.

That led to our latest expansion: statewide radio coverage.

Building around Idaho’s geography

Rather than creating a separate lineup for every city, we organized Idaho into six geographic radio regions. Each region has its own station selection, with national stations available to round out the listening options.

We also built ZIP code routing covering 320 Idaho ZIP codes. When someone searches by ZIP, IdahoLens can identify the appropriate radio region and display stations relevant to that area.

It sounds straightforward in a sentence, but deciding where regions begin and end, accounting for communities between major cities, and making sure listeners have a useful range of music, news, talk and other programming took considerable work.

Ninety stations, ninety details to get right

The expansion includes 90 station entries, with station information, streaming sources and logos. And the logos became a project of their own.

Some were missing. Others were too small, too large or did not display correctly. We built a dedicated visual review page to inspect the artwork, flag problems, make adjustments and repeat until the gallery looked right.

Even near the end, we were making small adjustments to individual logos. A station icon might be technically correct but still look out of place next to the others. That is the kind of detail I care about. Adding the stations is one accomplishment. Making the experience look consistent and intentional is another.

Expanding without losing what already works

While statewide radio was in development, other improvements continued across IdahoLens. When it was time to publish, we could not simply replace the live website with an older development version.

Instead, we integrated the completed radio functionality into the latest production code, preserving the existing Boise experience and the other features already on the site.

After the release, we checked locations including Twin Falls and Coeur d’Alene to confirm the regional station selections were working on the live website.

The little things add up

What started as a Boise-area radio feature has become a statewide listening experience. It is another step toward making IdahoLens genuinely useful for people throughout Idaho.

Behind a simple Radio tab are geographic decisions, station research, streaming tests, logo reviews, code changes and plenty of small adjustments most visitors will never notice.

That is exactly how it should be. The complexity belongs behind the scenes. The experience should feel simple.
